Unsealed Roads Case Study: Managing unsealed roads – the lifeline of the NZ economy
NZ Construction News Magazine, May 2020 issue

Central Otago District Council, like many predominantly rural councils, has a very high proportion of unsealed roads to maintain, but the use of a cutting-edge tool from IDS is maximising the performance of their unsealed road network whilst helping the industry.

Read how IDS, CODC, Deighton and the industry worked together to develop this first-of-it's-kind tool in NZ.

Tasman District Council achieves significant savings thanks to IDS Bureau Service using dTIMS

IDS has worked as a support partner to Tasman Council over many years to help it gain a comprehensive understanding of its data. The result is an industry best practice example of an effectively run network.

“Our council expected us to find some savings, and the modelling tool gave us the confidence to be able to reduce our reseals and rehabilitations by about 30%. Good data means good results. IDS helped us with our data quality which was important for our modelling outcomes and informing our long-term planning.” Transportation Manager, Jamie McPherson, Tasman District Council

NZTA calls on IDS & dTIMS after Kaikoura Earthquake

The IDS team provided a rapid response to the agency’s request at a time of extreme emergency. They used existing
data sets of the network to provide reliable, quick picture snapshots and recommended action plans.

“On Monday 14 November 2016, the second biggest earthquake in New Zealand's history hit south-west of Kaikoura. The quake devastated the main transport arterial route through Kaikoura which links Picton and Christchurch, cutting off the small town and severely impacting the main freight transportation network in the region. The New Zealand Transport Agency's immediate requirement was to analyse and advise on a safe, alternate transport as quickly as possible. We had to have results in an extremely short period of time and dTIMS was invaluable in providing that response.” Gordon Hart, NZTA.

Selwyn District Council - A Glowing Example of Efficiency

Selwyn District Council has used the IDS suite of tools to demonstrate the efficiency of their maintenance spend on their network. Selwyn has demonstrated how they have made better use of their base data to support forecasted strategies generated by the dTIMS analyses. This included significant statistical analyses on past performance, considering the ONRC targets and analysing truck-loading patterns on the network.
